Happy Teacher’s Day to all! 💐

Teacher’s Day is not just a date on the calendar—it is a day of gratitude, reflection, and celebration. It reminds us of the invaluable role that teachers play in shaping our minds, guiding our journeys, and nurturing our futures. At M.K. Bhavnagar University, the Department of English celebrates this day with creativity, scholarship, and heartfelt appreciation.

This year, I, Trupti Hadiya, a Master’s student from the Department of English, have curated a special digital offering to mark the occasion. My project brings together literature, interactive learning, and global dialogue—a true reflection of what we learn from our teachers: to think critically, explore deeply, and share knowledge widely.

🎥 Video Presentation: Derek Walcott’s A Far Cry from Africa

For this year’s celebration, I created a short video presentation on Derek Walcott’s powerful poem “A Far Cry from Africa.”

The poem grapples with the complex realities of colonialism, identity, and conflict. Walcott, born of mixed African and European heritage, reflects on the brutality of colonial violence during the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, while also questioning the divided loyalties of a poet who loves both Africa and the English language.

Through this video, I have tried to highlight:

The themes of divided identity and moral dilemma

Walcott’s use of striking imagery and symbolism

The poem’s universal relevance in understanding colonial histories and postcolonial struggles

📝 Interactive Quiz with E-Certificate

Learning is never complete without active participation. To make the celebration more engaging, I designed an interactive quiz on the poem.

The quiz not only tests your understanding of Walcott’s work but also encourages you to reflect on its deeper meanings. Upon completion, every participant will receive an e-certificate as a token of appreciation.

💫 Don’t forget to attempt the quiz and collect your certificate!

🌍 TED-Ed Lesson: Learning Beyond Boundaries

To extend this project to a global classroom, I uploaded the video on TED-Ed, a platform that encourages discussion and reflection.

The TED-Ed lesson offers participants a chance to not only watch the video but also engage in dialogue, share insights, and learn collaboratively. Through this platform, I hope to make Walcott’s poem a starting point for wider conversations about literature, history, and cultural identity.

🌸 A Celebration of Teachers through Literature

Teacher’s Day is more than an occasion for formal speeches or words of gratitude—it is about embodying the very values our teachers inspire in us: curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity.

By engaging with Walcott’s A Far Cry from Africa through video, quiz, and global discussion, I hope to honor that spirit. Literature, after all, is not only about reading texts—it is about questioning, interpreting, and finding connections to our own world.

This celebration reminds me that the best tribute to our teachers is to continue learning, exploring, and sharing knowledge.

Your participation—whether by watching the video, attempting the quiz, or joining the TED-Ed discussion—will make this Teacher’s Day truly special. Together, let us celebrate it as a festival of knowledge, reflection, and gratitude.

With warm regards,

Trupti Hadiya
